Employees are responsible for following all Berkeley Lab policies and procedures regardless of work location. Employees are expected to do the following with respect to their assigned flexible work arrangement:
- Provide adequate work space at their off-site work location, including maintaining adequate internet service for the employee’s household, as well as other household expenses, such as utilities.
- Remain accessible per the agreed-upon work schedule.
- Check in with their supervisor to discuss status and open issues.
- Be available for online meetings (e.g., Zoom, phone, etc).
- Based on the assigned work mode, be available to come on-site into their Lab site work spaces or for on-site meetings / events if and when a business need arises.
- Ensure that they are taking their rest and meal breaks as required for hourly paid non-exempt workers, and request supervisor approval in advance of working any overtime hours.
- In accordance with existing policy and agreements, request supervisor approval to use vacation, sick, or other leave in the same manner as when working at the employee’s regular work location on-site.
- Update and utilize Google Calendar or other shared resources to reflect status, availability, and contact information.
- Be able to work the hours established with their supervisor. Any deviations should have pre-approval by the supervisor.
Employees are expected to demonstrate sound professional judgement and play an active role to ensure that their arrangement works with their supervisor, colleagues, and stakeholders. Employees should create a communication plan with their supervisor to inform colleagues and clients. Employees should proactively identify solutions to any challenges that arise and be mindful that their supervisor has the responsibility and authority to modify the flexible arrangement if it results in an inability to meet the business needs for the role and division or department.
